Barfoots España

Barfoots Spain

To become closer to the market and develop our grower base in Southern Spain and Northern Africa, Barfoots branched out and set up a Spanish division of the company, Barfoots España S.L. in 2000

 Barfoots Spain

Barfoots relationship with Spain goes back over 20 years, and it continues to grow. In order to work more closely with the market and to develop our grower base in Southern Spain and Northern Africa, we branched out and set up a Spanish division of the company, Barfoots España S.L, located in El Ejido, Almeria (the most easterly province of Andalusia).

Our supplier assets in Spain are geographically diverse, which means we can take advantage of the best climatic conditions for growing our range of products from Seville eastward to Almeria, across the coastal peninsula northward to Lorca and Murcia. Barfoots España allows us to add value in delivering competitive advantage to our UK business through:

  • Management of the ‘direct’ grower strategy, by crop.
  • Investment in crops and the ability to de-risk the supply chain through our grower relationships
  • Maximising availability and through close technical and agronomic support ensure we supply the highest quality of certified produce
  • Seeking out and evolving new business opportunities, innovative new varieties, new products and industry leading practices

Farming in Spain

Almeria is known as the ‘winter garden of Europe’ with over 30,000ha of covered vegetable and salad production for export across Europe and even reaching the USA and Canada. The climatic location is an extreme version of our own microclimate on the South Coast of England with the Sierra Nevada mountain range sprawling out behind us, protecting us from the harsher weather of the north and also providing plentiful sweet water for irrigating. Other attributes to the microclimate in Almeria are the daylight hours and the strong winds which ensure maximum ventilation and keep cloud cover to a minimum.

In 2014, after many years working in the area, Barfoots invested in a considerably sized covered farming operation located in El Ejido in order to provide an end to end control over our supply; Barfoots España Farms S.L.. From this indoor farm, we are able to harvest around our UK cropping season, delivering alongside our Spanish grower partners of many years, from September to June. All crops harvested from our own farm as with our grower partners are harvested directly into our customer’s packaging. This means that handling can be kept to a minimum, driving down the cost for our customers and improving the quality of the food that ends up on their tables.
