Barfoot Energy

Barfoots is at the forefront of UK farm based anaerobic digestion, producing green energy from crop waste. We were the first UK farming operation to build a bio-digester plant, which was officially opened by Justin King, CEO of Sainsbury’s Stores PLC in 2010.

Looking back, the scale and scope of this project terrified us, with our second under construction and another four in the planning phase, you could say we have conquered those fears! –  reflects Julian Marks, Barfoots Managing Director.

Barfoots Energy imageSelf-financed and project-managed from ground works to technology partners, our bio-digestion journey began in 2005 when a trip to our German sweetcorn supplier featured a visit to a local farmer who had been making green energy from his sweetcorn crops since the 1980’s.
With increasing demand for electricity within our food production process, and with rising energy and waste disposal costs; the simple demonstration we were given by our host highlighted that a practical and sustainable solution to both waste and energy was within our grasp. This was the talking point of the journey home – but how would a farming company overcome the challenge of a construction project and technology we had no understanding of?
